Axplaination[]
Crocodiles (family Crocodylidae) or true crocodiles are large semiaquatic reptiles that live throughout the tropics in Africa, Asia, the Americas and Australia. The word "crocodile" comes from Middle English cocodrill which is loaned from French cocodril which is from Latin crocodilus, which is from Ancient Greek κροκόδειλος krokódeilos which is a compound perhaps from κρόκη krókē which is of Proto-Indo-European origin and δρῖλος drîlos which is of unknown origin but it is most likely from a pre-Indo-European substrate language. Crocodylinae, all of whose members are considered true crocodiles, is classified as a biological subfamily.
