The rat's scientific name is Rattus Rattus. Rats have a bad reputation but can be kept as pets. Many people are scared of mice and rats but they don't mean any harm. They live in sewers which is one of many reasons people hate them. Rats are intelligent creatures.
Rats did not spread the Black Plague. Many people think they did which is another reason of hating them. A flea bit a rat which then spread to other rats which then spread to humans.
They seldom weigh over 500 grams (1.1lb). The most common examples are the black rat and brown rat. They are bigger than mice and look like them.
Male and FemaleEdit
Males are called bucks. Unmated or unpregnant females are called does. Pregnant females are called dams.
Some countries eat rats for food.
The average lifespan of any given rat is depending on its species. They may only live a year due to predation.
Predators and ParasitesEdit
The rat serves as prey to cats and owls in domestic settings. In less urban settings, rats are preyed on by weasels, foxes and coyotes. These predators have little effect on the control of the population on rats. The parasites on rats pose a threat to humans.
- Rats have come from Old World Rats
- Pet rats are a lot better than wild rats.
- They are nocturnal.
- To my estimate, about 65% of the world's population are scared of rats.
- They prefer grains and fruit, but will eat anything.
